Short definition
The second-highest vineyard classification in Burgundy, one step below Grand Cru, indicating sites of recognized excellence.
Premier Cru (abbreviated 1er Cru) labels show both the village name and the vineyard name — for example, "Beaune Premier Cru Les Grèves." These are excellent sites that do not quite reach Grand Cru status. In Bordeaux, "Premier Cru" means something different — it refers to the 1855 Classification's top five estates (Lafite, Latour, Margaux, Haut-Brion, Mouton). Same words, different system.
