Short definition
Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers, with certification standards varying by country.
Organic grape growing bans synthetic chemicals in the vineyard. In Europe, organic wine also limits sulfite additions. In the US, "organic wine" means zero added sulfites, while "made with organic grapes" allows some. The distinction matters — most quality-focused organic producers do add small amounts of sulfite for stability. Organic farming is increasingly mainstream; many top estates practice it without bothering to certify.
