Old Vine

Pronunciation: OHLD VINE

Short definition

Grapevines typically over 35-50 years old that produce smaller yields of more concentrated fruit.

As vines age, they produce less fruit but what they do produce is more concentrated. Their deep root systems pull water and nutrients from far underground, adding complexity. There is no legal definition of "old vine" — some producers use it for 25-year-old vines, others wait until 80 or 100. In regions like the Barossa Valley or Languedoc, old-vine wines often offer outstanding value.
