Brut

Pronunciation: BROOT

Short definition

A sparkling wine sweetness level indicating very low residual sugar, typically under 12 grams per liter.

Brut means "raw" or "unrefined" in French, and it is the driest widely available style of sparkling wine. At under 12 grams of sugar per liter, a Brut Champagne tastes clean and dry. Extra Brut has even less sugar. Brut Nature (or Zero Dosage) has none at all. Most people drinking Champagne are drinking Brut — it is the default style and the most food-friendly.
